Literature Text

It had been a while since the breakup, about a year, and although you still had a year left until you graduated with a usable college degree, the credits were gradually racking up more and more. Tsukishima and you still stayed in touch of course. Both of you had actually marathoned Avatar: The Last Airbender a couple of weeks back when the university had set the students free for a brief break.

Believe it or not, you had started dating Daichi, a fellow student back from Karasuno who went to the same university as you and Tsukishima, and was extending his studies to earn a Master’s degree. It’s been a couple of months since the beginning of the new relationship, and you sometimes still wondered to yourself if it was right to let Tsukishima go the way you did.

“You know what you’re doing, (Y/N),” Daichi reassured you when you conversed with him about the problem that was plaguing your mind. “Although I wouldn’t like it, if you decide to go back to him then you will. That’s your decision, and I’ll handle myself. If you don’t then, well, then more of you for me,” the soft-hearted volleyball player informed you of his feelings.

It wasn’t like Tsukishima was aware of the new relationship you had entered. You never asked him about his relationships and he never asked about yours. It was the unspoken rule of the breakup. But you both still enjoyed making stupid jokes and laughing at snarky comments made at an unfortunate passerby when you two would be walking to get a coffee ((and maybe a slice of strawberry shortcake for Tsukishima)).

“(Y/N)!!!!” you heard a familiar voice shout out your name just as you were about to leave the mathematics building. Turning around, you caught a glimpse of short blonde hair before you were tackled into a breath-taking hug ((quite literally)).

“H-Hitoka??? What is it?” you choked out while struggling to pry her tight grip off of you.

“A-a-are you free this weekend by any chance?”

You paused and shuffled through your mind, prodding for any plans you might’ve made in advance.

“Uhh… Nope. Not yet at least. Why?”

Yachi stood in front of you and averted her eyes to the floor, finding the intricate patterns of the gray granite tiles to be much more interesting than anything in her line of sight. She twiddled with her fingers, a nervous habit she might’ve picked up from spending too much time with you.

    “Umm… uhh… W-well… I was wondering if you could………”

“Huh? What’d you say at the end?”

“I-I was wondering if you were free to go on a double date!!!” she quickly yelled out, promptly slapping her hand over her mouth and a furious blush adorning her face at the words she deemed to be embarrassing.

“Yeah. I think I should be able to go. I’ll have to ask Daichi though,” you told Yachi. She was one of the few people who knew of your relationship with Daichi, the few others being Sugawara, Kageyama ((you got along well with the cold setter believe it or not)), and Kiyoko.

“Thank you so much, (Y/N)! Oh my gosh thank you, thank you!!!” Yachi seemed to cry tears of joy. “I really didn’t want to go by myself I was just so nervous and — oh I’m just rambling now aren’t I???? I didn’t interrupt you did I? Were you busy??!? I’m sorry! Oh thank you so much! I have to go finish a lab report so I’ll text you later!!!”

“Well… that was certainly a storm,” you finally got to breathe out as the blonde girl sped off after she finished her barrage of words.

You walked back to your own apartment room quickly since the complex wasn’t all that far from the main campus. Dropping your backpack against the bed, you fell back on the comforting blankets of your bed and pulled out your cell phone, quickly dialing up Daichi.

    “Hello?”

“Daichi, are you free this Saturday?”

“Yeah I’m doing good thanks for asking,” he snickered before he responded. “Yeah, I’m free. Why?”

“Are you up for a double date? Yachi asked me.”

“Sure. Why not? You know where?”

“She said that she’ll text me and let me know, so I’ll text you later.”

    “Mkay. Later.”

With that, both ends of the line hung up.

Soon enough, Saturday came around and you were rushing around the apartment room to get ready for the date that you’d nearly forgot about because you woke up thirty a few minutes too late. Daichi was simply standing in the doorway of your room and laughing while watching you scurry around and gather up your belongings.

    “Oh, shut up! Stop laughing!!!”

“I even told you to wake up earlier.”

“Okay okay, I just overestimated myself, okay???”

He didn’t reply, but continued to laugh at your misfortune.

    “I’M DONE! I’m done I’m done I’m done!!! Let’s go LET’S GO!”

You ran out the door in front of Daichi as he trailed behind you. Eventually, you two arrived at the cafe that you and Yachi had arranged to meet at. Unfortunately, even though you were but a few minutes late, you noticed Yachi stand up and wave you over as you pushed the doors open.

“I’m sorry! I woke up a bit late!!!” you apologized and pulled a seat for yourself across from Yachi.

Taking a seat beside you and ruffling your hair while still chuckling, Daichi finally spoke up. “Hey, Yachi. I haven’t seen you in a while.”

“The world sure is small isn’t it? It’s nice that we all know each other!” she beamed and smiled that wide grin of hers, showing off a perfect row of sparkling white teeth.

    “Your date?”

“Oh he went to the restroom— Ah! Here!!!” Yachi called the boy over. You assumed that he’d be some cute and adorable, energetic and loving guy; compatible with the somewhat timid blonde girl. Oh how wrong realized you were once he came into your sight.

“Ke—…Tsuki…shima?” you stuttered out upon seeing the blonde boy once again, trying to connect the different parts of his name and say it correctly.

“(Y/N),” he simply stated your name bluntly.

You should’ve known who to expect when you’d caught sight of the lone slice of strawberry shortcake placed at the seat facing you.

‘Jesus,’ you muttered under your breath. ‘This is going to be a long, long date.’

“Well um… I’m just going to go ahead and order a coffee so… yeah I’ll be back,” you awkwardly stood up and made your way to the cashier, fishing money out of your pockets on the way.

Afterwards, you stood by the counter and waited for the order to be called, sparing a glance at your group every few seconds. Of course, Yachi and Daichi already began to discuss different topics ranging from their major to visiting Karasuno.

“Coffee for… (Y/N)!” your order was finally called out. Picking up the coffee, you thanked the barista and slowly walked back, not wanting to start a conversation with the blond.

“You sure took your time,” Tsukishima snickered at your nervous behavior.

“Oh shut up. I didn’t know that you were going out with Hitoka,” you shot back.

“And I didn’t know that you were going out with Daichi.”

“You’re unbelievable,” you muttered to yourself.

    “Oh? Is (Y/N) jealous?”

“Ha! If I was jealous, then the world must be ending.”

“Well, looks like it’s the end of the world for everyone.”

You simply looked away and didn’t reply, hiding the blush creeping up on your face.

The date wasn’t really a ‘date’… It was really Yachi and Daichi conversing with your occasional comment, but both you and the blonde boy were quiet for the most part.

“Hey, Yachi,” Tsukishima finally interrupted. “I think I’m going to go home now.”

Without receiving a reply, he stood from the chair and walked out of the cafe.

“Hey, Daichi… I umm— I think that I’ll go now too.”

You quickly took your coffee with you and exited the cafe, picking up your pace and hoping to catch up to Tsukishima.

Daichi sighed before moving the conversation with Yachi in a different direction. “We both knew that this would be the outcome…”

Fearing that her voice might betray her, Yachi did nothing but nod in agreement.

“Well, we should both go our own ways now too.”

    “Why’re you following me?”

“Who ever said I was following you, you presumptuous giant.”

    “…”

“Hey, Kei,” you suddenly spoke out and halted your walking.

“What?” his usually harsh tone softened a little bit and he stopped walking to turn towards you.

“I… uh… just wanted to say that… I wish we still shared cake together… and have those stupid sleepovers at your place where we just talk about the future…”

“(Y/N),” you heard him take footsteps in your direction, and you saw his feet stop short of you. If you looked up, you knew that you’d come nearly face to face with him, and you wouldn’t let him see the blooming red on your cheeks. So, you continued to seem fascinated by the seams and stone of the sidewalk groundwork.

“Is that your pathetic way of saying you miss me?” you heard a snicker from him. It was subtle, but you still caught it.

“You’re still so mean!” you pouted at the male. “So what if I might miss you… just a little bit… maybe…okay maybe not a little bit… maybe a LOT…”

“So then, I take it that… now we’re meant to be? Is it now?”

You looked up at his face; the sharp angle of his chin, the milkiness of his precious ivory skin, and oh GOD his oh so darling golden eyes were shimmering with a joy that his voice was adamant to reflect.

Before you realized it, you were being swept away by him once again. The feeling of his arm wrapped around your waist that you missed so much, and when he tilted your chin up to face him directly as he leaned down and—

“WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!” you spontaneously spoke out and pushed his lips away from yours before any contact was made. “You need to properly break up with Hitoka, and I need to properly break up with Daichi first too.”

He let out a rather strong “Tch” at your words. “You were always like that; making sure to get things done properly. Well, whatever. I like that too. We’ll save it for sometime later okay? And I’ll also…” Tsukishima continued as his voice grew husky and tone dropped, “be continuing something else later…” he lightly traced over your arm, neck, and lips as his last words until next time left his mouth.

    “Y-yeah…”

You mindlessly walked the rest of your way home. Well, not completely mindlessly; there was one thing on your mind. ‘I can be in love with him now. I can love him again.

The next morning comes and you remember to meet up with Daichi just before you head to your respective classes.

And now as you stood in front of him, all words disappeared from your mind. Anything you had prepared to brace for all vanished, and you stood there a fidgeting and nervous mess as you tried to break up with him.

“Ermm, well, you know how I’ve always told you I was unsure about my feelings…”

He simply nodded in reply, encouraging you to continue even though he already knew what you were getting at.

“Well, I finally sorted everything out and well…”

Sighing, he put you out of your misery and pat your head, signaling that he understood. “We can still stay friends though I hope,” he sheepishly laughed and pulled you into his chest for the last time until— well, who knows when.

“Yeah, of course,” you mumbled into his chest, your arms wrapping around his torso. “I’m sorry.”

“You don’t need to be sorry. You just chose him over me. That just gives me something to work on!”

You both stood there, relishing in this final intimate moment between you two before Daichi reluctantly detached you from himself.

“Gotta go now, or else my professor is going to bitch at me again.”

“Good luck on your stupid lab test!” you waved at him as he took off running towards the science building.

Just like all the other days, you once again headed for the mathematics building, but then you saw your Tsukishima Kei. The sight of him made you break out into a full sprint and latch onto his back with force you did not know you had.

    “You’re heavy.”

“Jeez, is that really the first thing you say when we see each other again?”

    “Get off.”

    “Of course not.”

Sighing, he gave up on getting you to detach from him and decided to head for your classroom to drop you off.

“Were you responsible?” you spoke directly into his ears, your hot breath against his skin making him blush. “You DID properly turn her down, right?”

Arriving at your classroom door, Tsukishima stopped and scowled. “Jeez, yes, I did. I’m not an idiot you know.”

    “Hey, Kei.”

He turned his face to directly counter whatever you had to say. “What is it n—?!?!!”

Much to his surprise, his lips met yours, and despite his lack of response, he was rejoicing in his mind as fireworks set off in his background; so much that he couldn’t bear to move away from your warmth.

You pulled back just a bit, although you were both reluctant to end the kiss, but when you whispered your words, the slight brush of your lips against his was enough to set a new living fire in his heart.

“Yeah, we were meant to be.

~EXTRA ENDING SCENE~

Dropping off from Tsukishima’s back, he pat your head and watched you head for the door. As soon as you pushed open the wooden barrier, both of you saw Hinata smiling like an idiot and almost shaking with excitement at his newfound revelation.

“WOOOOOOOO TSUKISHIMA IS GOING TO BE GETTING SOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!~” he shouted at the top of his lungs and quickly retreated back into the safer confines of his classroom.

You chuckled at the little ball of sunshine and turned around to see your irked boyfriend with a twitching grin.

Taking in a breath and reverting back to his usual shit-eating grin, Tsukishima’s eyes found yours before saying whatever retort he had.

    “Well, he’s not wrong.”

    “KEI!”
